Why We’re Talking About Men’s Health, and Why You Should Too!
Let’s be honest. If you ask most men how they’re doing, the answer is usually “grand” or “can’t complain.” But look behind the nods and nonchalance the picture can get a bit murkier.
Across Northern Ireland, men are dying younger than women. Not just in terms of life expectancy, but healthy life years too. The average man here will spend the final decades of his life managing illness, rather than enjoying good health. Add to that the rising rates of mental distress, late diagnosis of preventable conditions, and the stark reality that suicide remains the leading cause of death among men under 50, and it becomes clear we’re facing a crisis that’s too often hidden behind silence or humour.
This is why we’re hosting the first Men’s Health Conference & Exhibition under the Body Talk Live banner. Because silence doesn’t save lives. And because we need to change the script, at work, at home, in how we talk, and in how we support men to look after their health before a crisis hits.
We know this is an uncomfortable conversation for some. And we also know it’s necessary.
In corporate settings especially, men can be the least likely to take a sick day, book a GP appointment, or talk openly about what’s going on. They may lead teams, manage targets, and deliver results, all while ignoring persistent pain, sleep issues, stress, or burnout. Many carry quiet pressure, to keep going, to provide, to ‘be strong’. But strength doesn’t mean silence. And resilience isn’t about pretending you’re fine when you’re not.
We’re bringing together clinicians, thought leaders and real-world practitioners to make this conversation approachable, practical and grounded.
Our keynote speaker is someone who understands pressure better than most. Steven “The Quiet Man” Ward is a professional boxer from Belfast who spent nearly a decade in the ring, competing in the Light Heavyweight and Cruiserweight divisions. With 15 wins across 19 fights, he built a career on discipline, resilience and mental strength. But now retired, Steven’s ready to talk about life beyond the gloves, the reality of physical recovery, the mindset shift after sport, and how men can look after themselves without waiting for a breaking point. His story is powerful because it’s real. And that’s the kind of conversation we need more of.

And guiding us through the event is Andrew Ryan, comedian and presenter with a knack for getting people talking; he will definitely ensure everyone has a good laugh throughout the evening!
This isn’t a wellness retreat. It’s a call to action. We want attendees to feel connected, not alone. We want men to see that looking after their health isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s an act of leadership, self-respect and longevity.
So whether you’re a business owner wondering how to better support your male staff, an HR lead looking to build a more inclusive wellbeing strategy, or a partner who’s been quietly nudging someone to book that check-up, we invite you to come along. Listen. Learn. And maybe start a conversation that changes a life.
Because it’s time. And men’s health matters.
